Come one, come all to the Carnival!

That’s right, it’s time for another Carnival of Journalism and this month, I’m proud to be hosting. Not sure what a blog carnival is? Check out this entry on Wikipedia. The Carnival of Journalism includes posts from some of the brightest minds currently blogging on journalism, in my humble opinion. The Carnival gets underway with a [...]

How not to get that journalism-related job

Over the years, I’ve interviewed my fair share of candidates. And while the positions I’ve been hiring for have changed and the candidates have varied, here are five areas that keep my head shaking in disbelief. So consider these points as either observations or, if you’re looking for a job, words of caution: No One [...]

At a loss for words

So a funny thing happened to me on my way to starting my new job. In addition to everyone in our household (with the exception of our cat, Boo) getting monstrously sick, I managed to lose my bloggers voice. I initially chalked up the occurrence to the toll the flu had taken on my body, [...]

Bad online practices from the New York Times

OK, here’s a prime example of a lost linking opportunity that actually annoyed at least one reader (me). On Sunday, the New York Times posted a story “Dancers in the Crowd Bring Back ‘Thriller’.” It’s an interesting and entertaining piece about how Sony BMG has used viral marketing as part of the 25th anniversary of the [...]

In the name of efficiency, think first

I believe that the phrase “no one can do it all and frankly no one should” must be part of the discussion at any newspaper serious about their online operation. As I wrote in a previous post, there is a growing sentiment at many papers that there are just too few people to tackle what seems [...]

Don’t let your lack of time hurt your readers

A common refrain I heard in response to my post about enhancing stories was essentially, at many newspapers, there is not enough time and too few people to be doing that AND accomplish everything else they have to. Although I don’t necessarily agree with that analysis, I’m going to save my thoughts on time management [...]

Same old content doesn’t cut it for online readers

Honestly, I don’t understand newspapers who present their stories online as if they were publishing them on a printed page. It’s not just that lack of subheads in a 37-inch long story that frustrates me; it’s the complete ignorance of any web tools that could enhance story presentation and increase the amount of time readers [...]

Complaining is easy; Doing something, not so much

I have a question for the “underpaid, overworked, frustrated, pissed off and ignored media professionals” who are “publicly and anonymously” venting their anger on angryjournalist.com. I would like to know what each of you are doing in your own newsroom or news organization to change…anything? What effort(s) are you making to help improve the conditions [...]

Be Part of the Future in Philly

I'm hiring! I know, it's hard to believe in this economy, but philly.com is expanding its content team. What sets us apart from most online newspaper operations is that we're not simply an adjunct of the newsroom, but a separate company. We're more of a pure-play Internet company and that is reflected in how we think, what we do and who we hire. We need content producers/site hosts/channel managers; journalists who are excited about the Internet and what it has to offer. Intrigued? Interested? D… Continue

Came across your website while Googling for some advice to establish an online presence. Then luckily enough I found you on here! May I befriend you?

Thanks Yoni, I stumbled across an old email from you and decided I should join the site. Thank you for the invite.

Google was great, it was wild to see the Googleplex, and very interesting to observe Google culture first hand. It's also great to learn about adwords and the business model behind it, I am excited to start re-selling their services. I think we're going to well with it.

How's Philly? You must miss scenic Campbell Hall, NY.

Hello there,
I just came across you on this platform. Perhaps you would be interested in joining the reportwitters group that I have just created. We're a bunch of twittering reporters. For the moment, we stream our Tweets in a communal newsroom on www.reporTwitters.com and http://twitter.com/newsroom. There are over 80 of us and I am trying to get some collaboration going. Feel free to read our blog too http://blog.reportwitters.com. We're also on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=824064048.

Thanks for connecting, Yoni. I just bookmarked the blog on Delicious and will keep watching it. By the way, Ottaway's going to get a lot of ink (pixels, actually) in the upcoming Newspaper Next 2.0 report.

Hey, I liked your blog so much I subscribed to it. I especially liked the newsletter post--great idea. I think I'll use a newsletter to woo my sources (I cover neighborhood politics, so they're a persnickety bunch).
