Generation gap

So I’ve been reading this book my Dad sent me a few weeks ago. It’s not that impressive so far (about 100 pages in).  The mentions in the title of MySpace and YouTube seem to have been tacked on in order to sell books, fittingly enough, and the authors make their political alignments clear from the [...]

Standalones

Steve Yelvington, on the consequences of removing copy editors from the newspaper equation: “The dirty little secret of newspaper journalists is that a lot of them can’t write very well. That’s by no means universally true, but it’s true enough.” … Zac Echola, on his vision of a distributed and loosely joined newsroom: “The Internet is my platform. Not [...]

Transatlantic passenger ships

Mindy McAdams offers 10 simple facts about the survival of journalism. Number 5: “Newspapers were a nice business. Publishers could make the product insanely cheap (remember the penny press), and the advertising would cover the expenses, plus generate fantastic profits. However, this is clearly over. It’s done. It worked for a long time, but now, like trans-Atlantic [...]

PBS MediaShift blog seeks 'embedded' contributors at news organizations

Mark Glaser at MediaShift:
"As the redesign and revamp of the MediaShift site continues apace, I am looking for a few good folks to serve as correspondents for MediaShift, so I can get better insight into industries or worlds that I cover only occasionally. My hope is that with a group of 10 to 15 correspondents, I’ll be able to give my community of readers and contributors more food for thought…

Free music for your slideshows and videos? (Free like beer, free like speech)

A frequently asked question I take from newsrooms is "So can I just use any music I want to go with my slideshow (or video)?" (Putting aside, for the moment, the question of whether or not you *need* any music to go with those 22 photos of local high school graduations.) What are your favorite sources for free, OK-for-commercial-use music? My first and only choice on my list is ccmixter.org, if for no other reason than because the tracks are clearly la… Continue

See you in Vegas?

If, by any chance, any of the 1989 (!) of you will be at the E&P Interactive conference in Las Vegas this week, shoot me an e-mail or direct message on Twitter and we'll throw down a cup of coffee or other liquid in between sessions.

Why maintain a personal brand?

I've encouraged reporters to go out and get themselves a blog and start participating online in every social network that interests them, and maybe a few that don't, because you never know who you'll find there. But as you're jumping into the fray online to build up a body of work and try your hand at new technologies, remember to make it easy for your friends, colleagues, readers, sources, and potential employers to know who you are and how to reach you. File this under "maintaining a persona… Continue

Thanks...glad to be here. Hope this can be a venue too for discussing the growing threats to journalists and press freedom worldwide and how we can work together against these. Peace!

Hey Ryan,

> What brought me to WJ?

I'm interested in networking with journalists working in the Web 2.0 environment.

Why did you start WJ and how is the weather in Santa Cruz?

At the moment, I'm producing an online talk radio show. Would you be available for an interview?

Thanks for the welcome :).

So I know there are a million and a half resources out there about journalism, but do you have any "must-read" websites in regards to journalism or j-school?

I recently discovered your blog, and I am rooting through all the archives now. Thanks to you and some of your colleagues, I am considering journalism as a career.
