On IdeaLab: One reporter-turned-blogger explores local news after newspapers

Over at the PBS IdeaLab blog, I interviewed Michele Ellson, editor and publisher at The Island, a local news site devoted to covering the city of Alameda, which sits to the west of Oakland in San Francisco Bay.

Michele left newspapers in 2007 and launched The Island in early 2008, using Google's free Blogspot hosting and more… Continue

Bring A Professor Night at CollegeJourn.com: What did they learn?

If you spend any time on Twitter on Sunday or Monday nights these days, you might have noticed a live chat about journalism showing up here and there, driven by a hashtag like #collegejourn or #journchat. I've even seen #editorchat and #journ2journ show up from time to time.

In the case of #collegejourn, San Jose State student and Wired Journalists member Suzanne Yada has moved the chat off twitte… Continue

Commenting survey results

[Cross-posting this in a few places, so forgive me if the formatting is a bit imperfect here.]

For a couple years now, I've been working with editors, reporters, and commenters on news sites taking the following hypothesis as a given:
Commenters will be the most civil in the place that is the most public.

For example, I expected commenters on news stories, where more people could see their words, to be more civil than commenters on blog posts on a news site, whic… Continue

Howard "yes, he's my boss" Owens follows up on the December 2007 post that spawned Wired Journalists with an update as the year grinds to a burly, overwhelming close. (Well, it's been that way the last couple weeks for me, at least.)

Howard asks how wired you've become in 2008:

ReportingOn 2.0 is live and ready for your questions. And answers. It’s still the backchannel for your beat, but it’s an absolute re-imagining of the network. For those of you who haven’t been keeping score, ReportingOn is a project funded by the Knight News Challenge, and it’s a place for journalists of all stripes to find [...]

Five Keys to Authenticity

A few days ago at the annual APSE convention, I led two sessions on Networked Journalism.  On the way down to Pittsburgh from Rochester in the car, I tried to work out an idea I’ve been playing with for a while. Authenticity. Not authority, or reliability, or popularity, but a more difficult to quantify metric that I [...]

New at IdeaLab: An interview with Baghdad Brian

Over at IdeaLab, I’ve interviewed Baghdad Brian, who I met in October 2007 at the first Networked Journalism summit Jeff Jarvis threw at CUNY.  At the time, Brian was raising money to keep Alive in Baghdad going, and we did everything but pass a hat around the room to try to back him up. The next [...]

1. You should make the theme of your page the theme of the entire network! It's awesome.

2. You should make a Wired Journalists group of LinkedIn so we can all add it to our "Groups/Associations"

Hi Ryan,

Yes, I knew you were there speaking, but unfortunately we didn't get a chance to meet. I've been meaning to join Wired Journalists for some time now and decided to jump in last night. Lots of great discussion groups; I think I joined about 15 of 'em. Great stuff here, Ryan, nice work!

I am very new here.i ended up at your page rather mysteriously when i was looking for a partner to produce a film script. If this is not the right place to find a producer or a partner for that matter, please recommend another website or community for me. Remember BLOOD DIAMOND, THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND, HOTEL RWANDA etc? The script my company as developed is better than those.
