Invisible Inkling

2000 strong at Wired Journalists

So many milestones this week… Here’s another one:  Wired Journalists now has more than 2000 members. The Ning-powered social network that Howard Owens, Zac Echola, and I created back in January has exceeded our expectations, in terms of numbers, interaction, community, and the learning/teaching that’s going on there. Plus, it’s really bringing some people out of the woodwork. I’m [...]

The Challenge

I’m proud to announce that ReportingOn won a Knight News Challenge grant. I’m in Las Vegas at the E&P Interactive Media Conference for the announcement of all the winners. Yesterday, Brein McNamara, another News Challenge winner, said more or less that we’re all in over our heads to some extent. That’s the right idea. We’re supposed to [...]

Expand your media blogosphere today

Like many readers of blogs about the news business, I started big. As in, with the big guys, the heavy hitters, the bloggers who showed up in Romenesko and were hard to ignore. The Jays and Jeffs and Dans of the media blog world. I’ve dramatically expanded my reading list since then, but meeting [...]

See you in Vegas?

If, by any chance, any of the 1989 (!) of you will be at the E&P Interactive conference in Las Vegas this week, shoot me an e-mail or direct message on Twitter and we'll throw down a cup of coffee or other liquid in between sessions.

Why maintain a personal brand?

I've encouraged reporters to go out and get themselves a blog and start participating online in every social network that interests them, and maybe a few that don't, because you never know who you'll find there. But as you're jumping into the fray online to build up a body of work and try your hand at new technologies, remember to make it easy for your friends, colleagues, readers, sources, and potential employers to know who you are and how to reach you. File this under "maintaining a persona… Continue

What's News To You?

When I'm evangelizing the New Media mindset and skillset out in the wild, I often start the conversation by asking folks what they think of as "News." Here's how I start my day:
  1. GMail
  2. Google News or Yahoo News or NYTimes.com
  3. Twitter (replies first)
  4. Google Reader (shared items first)
  5. Facebook
  6. Local newspaper site
  7. Work e-mail
  8. IM client
All of these provide me with "News," so what does that mean for the traditional… Continue

About the Feedstream

You may have noticed the long list of links on the left side of the WiredJournalists.com front page. Those links and blog posts come from a wide swath of blogs about the past, present and future of news. Most of the folks behind these blogs are members here. Here's the current list of sources (in no particular order after the top three). If you want to add your blog to the stream, just send me a private message on WJ.com with the URL of your feed.… Continue

Hey, Ryan!

Where do I go with support questions. I think my account may not be working right.

Hey Ryan,

> What brought me to WJ?

I'm interested in networking with journalists working in the Web 2.0 environment.

Why did you start WJ and how is the weather in Santa Cruz?

At the moment, I'm producing an online talk radio show. Would you be available for an interview?

Thanks for the welcome :).

So I know there are a million and a half resources out there about journalism, but do you have any "must-read" websites in regards to journalism or j-school?

Yep, we bought Ellington and licensed the source code, so by the time we're done I'm sure we'll end up with some sort of hybrid. But all Django-powered, baby ;)
