On March 18, Dan Meth created a U.S. sitcom map. (That followed his popular New York map of sitcoms.) On April 2, Flowing Data issued a challenge to improve the U.S. map.
Today I finished this interactive map of sitcom locations. (And by finished, I mean someone already mentioned two more sitcoms that should be [...]
Last week I taught a session on visualizing data at the Knight Center, highlighting free and easy-to-use multimedia tools. Over the next couple of days, I’ll be posting tutorials on everything we discussed. So far that includes:
The basics of HTML
Creating an HTML table from a spreadsheet
Creating graphics with Google Docs
Creating interactive graphics with Many [...]

I created a new Web site yesterday: President Bingo. Grab a bingo card, watch tonight's debate (and/or the post-game commentary), and see who wins. Enjoy!
Hello there,
I just came across you on this platform. I have just created a reportwitters group here too, to catch the people who're not on Facebook (Our group there is on: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=824064048.)
Just as I mention that it doesn't look like we're going to get Flash, I find out that we are going to at least experiment with it! About six years ago, I was teaching myself how to use Flash by following lynda.com's HOT book on Flash. Great tutorials. Not entirely comprensive, but far better than the software manual. I look forward to learning how it's changed and all the new fun stuff.
So am I reading this correctly: You actually write the coding for some of your graphics in JavaScript and Ajax?! That is insane. :) I know how to manipulate a bit of coding, following by example. I have a book on learning CSS, which seems integral to Flash. It was six years ago. So much has changed.
It's great to see others experimenting with google maps and other online interactive software. Leading the way into the future!
Last night, I noticed you are a member of the Wordpress group here and I seem to recall you are quite active on VizEds old forums. I like your blog entry on using Flash for bar charts. Do you all use Flash a lot for online graphics? We haven't at all, and it appears as though we won't be using it in the future.
Anyway, just now I was reading Google's LatLong blog and saw this post about people using GoogleMaps, with a link, I believe, to your flood map.
I did work with Sharon, and Phil Wieland and Mark Kiesling, who each have a news column. Mark's blog is good, and the paper's done a good job embracing multimedia (nwi.com).
Thanks for pointing me to other old Timers. :) I'll check for them. My guess is that while we have Bill Nangle in common (yep, he's still there), they probably came after I left.
I'm enjoying reading your posts and pointers. Thanks, Erica. :)
Hi, Erica -- new to Wired and, in scouting for familiar faces, saw that you worked for The Times (NW Indiana). So did I, though I preceded you. I started as a beat reporter in '89 when they were in the throes of moving to Munster. Covered Calumet City and then the environment. Left to write for a PR agency in the city in '92 (yep, I bailed, though made my way back eventually). Nice to meet you.

We haven't used Google maps for our own website. I believe we should in cases such as your flood map.
A fun, two-day exploration and coincidence.
Nancy
