Learning from Young Journalists – The Livingston Awards

Nominees for the Livingston Awards for Young Journalists were announced today. The annual prizes recognize reporting by reporters under 35. This year’s list is pretty big. Unfortunately, the website didn’t include links to the entries, so I spent my evening digging around. After all, one of the best ways to learn any craft is to study what [...]

Journalists: Where's your non-office hangout?

Hello all,

My most recent post on Ricochet features a video about the demise of the journalist bar. But I suspect that while the old watering holes may be folding, there are new places where photogs, scribblers and journowonks hang out.

If your colleagues have a favorite lunch spot, coffee house, or after-hours place where you gather to trade war stories, toss around ideas and decompress let me know whe… Continue

What's the best conference you've ever been to?

We've all been to those conferences where we think, "Man, I shoulda saved my money and time."

Rare, it seems, are those conferences that make us excited to go, thrilled to be there and happy that we've got new ideas to bring home and new relationships to nurture.

So I'd love to know: What's the best conference you've ever been to and what made it great?

The NICAR classes teach specific skills, e.g. data cleaning with SQL or how to use Ruby on Rails to build web data apps. The panels are good, too, and usually geared toward tips and strategies on how to get specific tasks done. It's like college for three days.

Hi, Chrys! Hey, as we plan for a job fair Sept. 10, the traditional; way of reaching college students (mail to their schools) will not work. This could be a great time to apply some online networking to reach them.

The two Steves were at last year's conference, but largely played to the business side people. I think social marketers have valuable things to say to people on the editorial side that may spark some new ideas. I'd love to see more professional bloggers too. Michael Arrington was awesome a couple years ago, despite the uncomfort he brought to the room - which was and is completely necessary.

I'd be happy to share my notes ... but I'll be presenting as part of the advances in newsgathering panel. Though I will be attending the ubiq. journalism panel ... and could send you what I gather from that session.
